Job Summary

The Cardiology Staff Nurse plays a critical role in providing specialized care to patients with heart-related conditions. This position involves working closely with cardiologists, monitoring patients, and delivering exceptional nursing care to ensure optimal recovery and well-being.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide direct nursing care to patients in the cardiology department.
  2. Monitor and record patients’ vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG readings.
  3. Assist cardiologists during diagnostic procedures such as angiograms, echocardiograms, and stress tests.
  4. Administer medications, IV infusions, and injections as prescribed.
  5. Educate patients and their families about cardiac care, treatment plans, and post-procedure instructions.
  6. Respond promptly to cardiac emergencies, including managing cardiac arrest situations with ACLS protocols.
  7. Maintain accurate patient records and update charts regularly.
  8. Collaborate with the healthcare team to create and implement individualized patient care plans.

Required Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Nursing (GNM) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc Nursing).
  • Active Nursing License from a recognized authority.
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • Previous experience in cardiology or critical care nursing (2+ years preferred).

Key Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of cardiac conditions and treatments.
  • Proficiency in handling ECG machines, defibrillators, and other cardiology equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Patient Care and Monitoring

    • Provide high-quality care to patients admitted with cardiac conditions such as heart disease, arrhythmias, heart failure, etc.
    • Regularly monitor and record patient vitals (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate) and ensure timely intervention if abnormalities are observed.
    • Administer prescribed medications, including IV drips, oral medications, and injections, as directed by the cardiologist.
  • Assisting in Diagnostic Procedures

    • Assist cardiologists during diagnostic tests like ECGs, echocardiograms, stress tests, and angiograms.
    • Prepare patients for procedures, ensuring they are comfortable and informed.
    • Monitor patients' condition during tests and report any signs of distress or complications.
  • Emergency Response

    • Respond promptly to cardiac emergencies, including cardiac arrest situations, utilizing Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) techniques.
    • Administer emergency care like CPR, defibrillation, or medication as per the guidelines.
  • Patient Education

    • Educate patients and their families about managing cardiac conditions, lifestyle modifications, and post-care instructions after procedures.
    • Provide counseling on heart-healthy diets, exercise, medication adherence, and stress management.
  • Collaboration with Healthcare Team

    • Collaborate with cardiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement patient care plans.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary team discussions to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping

    • Accurately document all nursing interventions, patient progress, and changes in condition.
    • Maintain electronic health records (EHR) up to date and communicate important changes to the medical team.
  • Preventive Care

    • Promote heart disease prevention strategies, such as health screenings, lifestyle modifications, and early detection of risks.
    • Monitor patients for signs of complications, including arrhythmias, blood clots, or fluid retention.
  • Post-Operative Care

    • Provide post-operative care for patients who have undergone cardiac surgeries like bypass surgery or angioplasty.
    • Ensure proper wound care, medication administration, and manage any complications.
  • Maintaining a Safe and Clean Environment

    • Ensure that patient rooms, equipment, and common areas in the cardiology unit are sterile, safe, and well-maintained.
    • Follow infection control protocols to prevent the spread of infections, especially in a critical care environment.
  • Continuous Learning and Improvement

    • Stay updated with the latest advancements in cardiology nursing practices and medical procedures.
    • Attend training sessions, workshops, and seminars to improve skills and knowledge in the field of cardiology.

Required Skills

  • Clinical Expertise in Cardiology

    • Strong understanding of cardiovascular conditions such as heart failure, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, and hypertension.
    • Ability to monitor and interpret heart rhythms, ECGs, and vital signs effectively.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification

    • Ability to perform life-saving procedures such as CPR, defibrillation, and managing cardiac arrest situations according to ACLS guidelines.
  • Technical Skills

    • Proficient in the use of cardiology equipment such as ECG machines, defibrillators, and pacemakers.
    • Experience in administering medications, IV fluids, and injections based on prescribed treatments.
  • Patient Care and Monitoring

    • Skilled in assessing and managing patients in the cardiology unit, ensuring their comfort and safety.
